Our schools and the people who work in them have never been so important in the lives of pupils and their families.

Today, schools are so much more than education centres – they play a pivotal role in shaping the lives of young people both in class and outside, and go above and beyond to support the families of their pupils wherever they can. We want you to tell us all about the amazing schools in your community – the fantastic folk who work there and how they have made a difference to your youngsters and community.

The Heroes school of the year will be a school where the teacher and teams within, raise the standards of education and make a positive impact on the personal and academic success of its students and the wider community.

RSE customer and stakeholder manager, Jill Joiner, said: “RSE are supporting the Highland Heroes 2023 campaign as the school of the year award sponsor. We believe it is important to take the opportunity to recognise the heroes within our own communities and the excellent work that they do.

“We are delighted to be highlighting the fantastic work of Highland schools by sponsoring this award, as they facilitate the education and development of young people in the local area.

“Nominations for the various Highland Heroes award categories, including school of the year, are now open and we encourage people to nominate the school they believe should get the recognition it truly deserves.”

Highland Heroes feature 14 categories where you can nominate individuals or groups in your community who you feel have gone above and beyond to support and care for others.

The categories are:

  • Primary pupil
  • Primary teacher
  • Secondary pupil
  • Secondary teacher
  • School of the year
  • Brave child
  • Carer
  • Fundraiser

  • Emergency services/armed forces hero
  • Healthcare hero

New for 2023 is the green hero award which will be presented to an individual who is helping to create a cleaner, greener future.

Each week, your favourite Highland News & Media newspapers and websites will include special features about each of the categories along with all the details of how you can nominate individuals or organisations in your community.

Once all of your nominations are in, our judging panel will create a shortlist where you will be invited to vote for your Highland Heroes of 2023.

As well as the 14 main categories, there is also a very special accolade which will be presented at the awards ceremony at the Macdonald Drumossie Hotel, Inverness on Friday March 10, 2023.

The hero of heroes will be decided by our judges from all of the winners at the ceremony and revealed on the night!
