Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager Duncan Ferguson admits that player departures have opened up space in his squad to bring new faces in before the transfer window closes.

A glut of exits across the last few days have seen Sean Welsh, Zak Delaney, David Wotherspoon and Cillian Sheridan leave the club permanently, while Lewis Hyde has gone out on loan.

Harry Hennem, who never made a first team appearance for the Caley Jags, was also released.

With the window half-gone already, James Carragher has been Ferguson’s only recruit so far, but the ICT boss still intends to be busy before the deadline passes.

“We are always looking to recruit,” he said after Friday night’s defeat to Dundee United.

“Zak and Sean have gone, and obviously David Wotherspoon is away as well. We are a bit short now but that’s the job.

“You’ve got to free up space to bring your own players in. That’s what I’m looking to do.”

Carragher made his Inverness debut against Dundee United, playing 89 minutes of the 1-0 defeat. Despite the final score, though, Ferguson thought that the young defender did well.

“He carried a knock throughout the second half but I thought he had a great debut coming into this environment and playing against the best team in the league,” Ferguson explained.

“I know the family well, but he’s coming here because he’s a very good player – not because of that. A lot of people down south rate him very highly.

“He’s a warrior and a battler, just like his old man, and I thought he acquitted himself very well.

“I was well pleased with his performance but I was gutted for the players because they put so much into it. They definitely deserved a point out of the game but the big decision just didn’t go for us.”
