Highland Council Convener Bill Lobban has described the reading of the proclamation of King Charles as the new monarch as something that is “is really important for the Highlands and more importantly for the people of the Highlands.”

He went on to say that at a sad time it was a “proud moment” for the region and he expressed his admiration for Her Majesty The Queen for her length of service, which is described as “superb.”

Speaking directly after the Proclamation was read out by the Sheriff Principal Derek Pyle Convener Lobban said: “I think it was probably quite a coup and I was extremely pleased to see the Sheriff Principal offered to read it here.

“It is a very proud moment for the Highlands but I have to be honest we organised this some time ago.”

On the passing of Her Majesty, he said: “I have never known any other monarch but Her Majesty was loved by the people of the Highlands and that is the most important thing. She was a wonderful monarch to her people.

“And it is unlikely that it will ever be repeated. As you just said, irrespective of how you feel about the monarch and the monarchy, you have to respect the lady herself who did her duty from a young woman to her very old age, so it is quite superb.”

As the council is taking part in the official mourning period, the Convener said there would not be any public events “for the foreseeable future” as several committees and the 400 year old tradition of the Kirking of the council have been postponed.

“All front-facing meetings of the council will be postponed for the foreseeable future, the first meeting of the council will actually be the full council and it will be at its regular time. The Kirking of the Council is a matter for the Provost,” he said.
