Ross Edgley revealed he was diagnosed with cellulitis after completing 52 hours and 39 minutes covering approximately 79km in the world famous stretch of water.

He was going for a world record but fell short of the time required and posts on social media in the aftermath showed he was in hospital as a result of his extended time submerged in the chilly waters.

In a further Facebook post he said: "Doctors diagnosis was cellulitis (an infection of the skin) which, if untreated, can spread into the lymph nodes and circulatory system which is where it can become a lot more serious.

"This is why I wanted to say a HUGE thank you to my support team and an equally GIANT post of appreciation to all the staff at Inverness hospital. Since it was a hard decision to stop the swim when we did, but with retrospect it was 100% the right one."

Despite things not going exactly to plan he added that the swim had been an "EPIC way to spend 50+ hours in Loch Ness", undertaken to "raise awareness for the protection and preservation of the sea kelp forests on the coast of Scotland".

He said he was already plotting his next adventure, having also revealed in a post on Friday that "we’re considering this a ‘test run’ with hard lessons learned….BIGGER plans for 2023 to swim, protect and preserve our oceans."
