Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager Duncan Ferguson said Dundee United should never have been allowed to score a goal from the halfway line after saying one of his players was fouled just before the goal.

Louis Moult scored from the halfway line to equalise for Dundee United in the 1-1 draw at Tannadice after Wallace Duffy gave Inverness the lead in the first half.

But Ferguson was adamant Cammy Kerr was fouled just before Moult launched his effort from the halfway line which left goalkeeper Mark Ridgers flatfooted.

Inverness were furious no foul was given in the build up to the goal and resulted in defender James Carragher and assistant manager Gary Bollan both being booked for their protests.

Ferguson said the foul should have been given and the referee got the decision wrong, saying Kerr was fouled before Moult launched his strike from halfway that found the net.

He said: "It was a free kick for a foul on Cammy Kerr, it was right in front of the referee.

"He nudges Cammy and he goes down, nine times out of 10 you get the decision. We didn't get the decision.

"The referee didn't see it as a free kick but it was a free kick.

"To me it wasn't a debate, but he saw it differently.

"But it was a great finish from the lad and it was going to take something like that to beat our goalkeeper today."

Despite being held to a point at Tannadice, Ferguson still felt a draw against the league leaders was a good result.

However, they remain in the relegation zone in ninth place and three points off Ayr United in eighth.

"I am delighted to come to Dundee United and get a draw against a team who people are expecting to go up.

"Nobody gave us a chance as we're the team near the bottom of the league.

"We got our noses in front and managed the game well.

"Of course, you have to soak up pressure as game goes on.

"Dundee United threw everything at us with long throws, long balls in the box and they defended it well enough.

"The boy hit a great shot and it came off the inside of the bar. But we were a threat as the game was going deep and we created chances ourselves, we were always a threat today and were worth the point."

Inverness did move nine points ahead of Arbroath after they lost 1-0 at home to Partick Thistle, but Ferguson is not getting complacent that they have done enough to at least avoid finishing bottom.

He said: "I don't think you forget about anything, Arbroath can win games and have a game in hand, but we've got another point on our total.

"Some results didn't go for us today, but I am more than pleased to get a draw at Dundee United. Now at Partick we will look to put in the same kind of performance."
