MANAGER Duncan Ferguson praised his Inverness Caledonian Thistle team for a strong defensive performance to earn a 1-1 draw against Dundee United at Tannadice on Saturday afternoon.

Nathan Shaw put Caley Thistle in the lead six minutes into the second half, but Kevin Holt equalised four minutes later as Dundee United finished the match stronger.

However Inverness were able to hold out for a point and Ferguson gave his team full credit for sharing the points at Tannadice.

Asked if Inverness deserved a point, Ferguson said: "For our first half performance, yes.

"In the second half, Dundee United were stronger and the better team although we scored on the counter attack.

"In the first half I thought we were the better team but Mark Ridgers made a great save to keep a clean sheet to keep it goalless at half time.

"We could have taken a couple of opportunities, but at half time I was really pleased.

"I thought our football was scintillating at times, we connected, bended and played really well and got the wing backs into the play.

"We got the extra pass when we needed, worked hard on the cut backs in training and it worked."

Ferguson's only disappointment was Inverness were only in front for four minutes and conceded a goal through a set piece.

"We didn't hold on to the lead long enough but they are the top team in the division, as i've said before I think they will win the league.

"We managed to create chances and we took one but their set play was a killer."

Inverness made a change to their formation from 4-4-2 to 3-5-2, in particular playing three centre backs in Morgan Boyes, Danny Devine and Nikola Ujdur.

Ferguson says he took a gamble changing a formation that was undefeated in their previous three matches, but says it paid off.

"I changed the set up of the team which was a big decision for myself because previously we were 4-4-2 but we went with three centre backs and I thought we adjusted quite well.

"And they kicked balls into the box and we defended the box well, but just got undone with a set play."
