A former women's rugby international from Inverness will be honoured during tomorrow's Six Nations game between Scotland and Wales.

Jeni Sheerin was in the Scotland team which took on Ireland in what was both side's first ever women's rugby international at Raeburn Place in Edinburgh on February 14 1993.

By the final whistle, Scotland had won 10-0.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary, Jeni has been invited along with former team mates and management members to Murrayfield tomorrow where they will be treated to hospitality before and after the game.

They will also step out on to the pitch at half-time.

Jeni, whose married name is Jeni Alexander, is a director at Sharon Leon Carpets in Inverness.

She started playing rugby while at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and was still a relative newcomer when the landmark game took place on Valentine's Day 1993.

She had only been playing for about a year and was in the back row.

"We all got a red rose as it was February 14," she said.

"It was great. I was 19 and full of enthusiasm.

"We had trained hard and we didn't know what to expect."

She remembered there being a significant crowd.

"I remember the crowd, the atmosphere, the smell of the changing rooms," she said.

"It was a fantastic day."

She said they had no idea at the time how much women's rugby would progress and gain a higher profile over the years.

"At the time, I don't think we realised we were blazing a trail and making a difference," she said.

"The celebration tomorrow is to mark the occasion."

In total, Jeni played for the Scottish Women's Rugby team for 10 years.
