Danny Devine says Inverness Caledonian Thistle’s new year’s resolution for 2024 should be to become more ruthless at both ends of the pitch.

The Caley Jags failed to score in matches either side of the new year – first in a stalemate with Morton to end 2023, before losing 2-0 to Airdrieonians to kick off 2024.

While a clean sheet in the former gave some room for encouragement, sloppy defending cost them dearly on Tuesday afternoon against Airdrie.

Devine missed that trip to the Excelsior Stadium, but it was still indicative of where Inverness must improve if they are to salvage any hopes of a promotion play-off spot before the end of the campaign.

“It’s obviously disappointing – our league position is not where we want it to be,” Devine admitted.

“There have been a lot of positives too though, especially since the new manager came in. You can see the style of play he’s trying to implement.

“It hasn’t always come off for us, but we’re trying. We probably just need to be a bit more ruthless at both ends of the park.

“We need to take our chances when they come, but we also need to be solid and give the forwards a base to go and win the game from.

“If there’s anything we need to change, it’s a wee bit of ruthlessness in both halves.”

Next up for the Caley Jags is another away match, this time making their longest journey of the season to Ayr United.

With the two sides sitting right next to each other in the Championship table, Inverness cannot afford to let their winless streak – already at five matches – go on any longer.

“These games against teams around about us in the table are very important,” Devine added.

“If we can come out of this week with some points on the board it can kick us on for the rest of the season.

“That will be our aim. It will be tough, but we’re definitely going there to try and win.”
