INVERNESS Caledonian Thistle manager Duncan Ferguson has hailed Mark Ridgers as the best goalkeeper in the Championship after his performance in the 3-1 win over Ayr United.

Ridgers made a number of great saves during the match to keep Ayr United at bay for most of the 90 minutes and earn Inverness all three points.

It was Inverness Caledonian Thistle first win in six matches and the first since beating Queen's Park 4-1 at the start of December.

The victory moved Inverness up to seventh place in the Championship and four points clear of Arbroath and Queen's Park in the bottom two.

Ferguson paid tribute to Ridgers at full time, saying he was vital in their victory at Ayr and thinks he is the best goalkeeper in the Championship.

Ferguson said: "He was brilliant and you need a top goalkeeper.

"All top teams need a top goalkeeper and he is maybe the best goalkeeper in the league. He definitely stood up at the right moments and made the crucial saves."

Defender Morgan Boyes was the unlikely goal hero for Inverness with the defender finding the net twice in the 3-1 win along with Billy Mckay's opener.

Ferguson was delighted for Boyes scoring his first goals for the club, but was just as impressed with his defensive performance.

"Morgan got in good areas, and he got in the middle of the box for his goals.

"He also defended well when we got put under pressure. Morgan has done really well, he got his brace and i'm made up for him."

Ferguson hopes that victory over Ayr United will now give them confidence they can start looking above as well as below them.

He said: "That gives us confidence and momentum, the second half we could have four or five.

"Everything is looking better for us now, but if we lost this one we would be cut adrift at the bottom. We have played better than that, but to come away from home and score three goals against a team around about us, I was pleased that we were worthy winners."

Ferguson was suspended from the dugout after being sent off after full time in the 2-0 defeat at Airdrie on Tuesday.

Assistant manager Gary Bollan took charge in the dug-out during the match, but Ferguson will return to the sidelines on Friday night when they face Dundee United at the Caledonian Stadium.
