Duncan Ferguson says he will be looking for new signing to have the same sort of impact as David Wotherspoon – and has not ruled out the Canadian international staying with Caley Thistle.

The St Johnstone legend signed a short-term deal with Inverness, a contract that is due to expire in mid-January.

He has had a supremely impressive impact over the last couple of months, to the extent that Inverness have offered what Ferguson has previously described as a "really good offer" to stay in the Highland capital.

Wotherspoon is still to make his final decision on where his future lies, but regardless Ferguson is hoping that any new recruits when the transfer window opens next month can make a similarly positive impression.

"I hear a few things here and there, but as far as I know it's ongoing," Ferguson said of Wotherspoon's situation.

"The offer is still there for him, but I know he's got other offers and he's going through that in his mind with his family. We will give him as much time as he wants.

"We brought David in and he's shaped up to be one of our best players, so hopefully we can add players in the transfer window.

"We're looking to see if we can get any loans in. It's not easy to attract players, but we're in there fighting with everyone else to see whether we can bring players up here.

"It would be massive for us to get two or three players in to help the squad. I've got a good team and we have good players, but it is always nice to strengthen."

Ferguson will also be hoping that Wotherspoon is fit to feature in their first match of 2024 after hobbling off in Saturday's stalemate with Morton.

The attacker picked up a hamstring injury that was not thought to be too bad at first glance, but the disappointment of seeing Wotherspoon go off was somewhat balanced by the return of David Carson for his first appearance in more than a month.

"David only trained for a couple of days," Ferguson explained.

"It was nice to get him back out there and he did quite well. He showed a wee bit of quality with his experience.

"It wasn't a great game on Saturday. Technically, we were off it, which is not like us, because our passing game is normally very good.

"Even although we dominated the ball, we never looked like scoring.

"The Championship is so tight – that's why I am quite happy to have got a point on Saturday when we were not at our best against Morton.

"We can be better than that and we're hoping we will be better than that against Airdrie, which is a tough place to go. They're all tough in this league.

"We have never quite created a distance at the bottom of the league. We stumbled at the wrong times."
