Duncan Ferguson has confirmed Inverness Caledonian Thistle have “worked a bit of magic” to make a strong offer to David Wotherspoon.

The Canadian international only signed a short-term deal until January, but has been one of the side’s key performers since scoring on his debut against Airdrieonians at the end of October.

Ferguson has previously made his feelings on keeping Wotherspoon in the Highland capital known to the Caley Thistle board, and his desire to keep the 33-year-old at the club was echoed by players like Billy Mckay.

Now, ICT’s manager has confirmed the ball is in Wotherspoon’s court when it comes to staying in Inverness, saying he is happy that the Caley Jags have made a strong offer.

“He’s got his offer, a strong offer, from the club which I’m pleased about,” Ferguson explained.

“We’ve shown David a lot of respect with the offer. he has come in and done really well, worked extremely hard, and we’ve been good to him to get him back in the game.

“He will do what’s right for himself and his family, but it’s a great offer we’ve given him and we’re all hoping we can get him signed. That will be down to David and his advisors.

“We’ve certainly worked a bit of magic with the offer we’ve made him.

“I said to him when he first came in that if he did the business, we would revisit his contract, and we’ve done that.

“We’ve made him a very strong offer and we’re all hoping that we keep him. The players like him, I like him – at the moment – and we’re hoping he signs it.”

Caley Thistle travel to Morton for league action tonight, and Ferguson will continue to be without David Carson.

Joining him outside of the matchday squad will be Wallace Duffy, who has a pulled calf.

At the time of writing, Ferguson himself was still waiting to see whether he would be on the touchline after being shown two yellow cards in last Saturday’s 4-1 win over Queen’s Park at Hampden.

However, he knows that it is absolutely imperative that Inverness pick up all three points against the side currently sitting bottom of the table if they are to keep their hopes of a promotion charge in the second half of the campaign alive.

“I think this week is crucial (for our season),” he reasoned.

“If we can pick up points in the next two games against teams that are around us in the league – we’ve just beaten one too – then we can start looking up the table instead of talking about the gap to the bottom.

“If we can win these next two games, that will give us a lot of daylight. Of course, if you lose, you’re dragged back into it. I’m sure after Arbroath, we’ll have a clearer picture of where we stand.

“Morton are coming off the back of a good away win so their tails will be up, but so will ours so hopefully we can get some kind of result.”
