A popular Inverness café has announced a temporary unexpected closure due to yesterday's power cut.

XOKO, in Bridge Street, was among dozens of city centre businesses disrupted after a fire at a substation in Waterloo Place at around 3.30am on Friday.

More than 2800 homes and businesses initially lost power.

Around 2600 of them had their electricity connection restored by 8am, but the remainder – which included numerous city centre businesses – remained affected.

By lunchtime all but 100 properties were reconnected, and by 7.05pm power was restored to all premises.

Most businesses affected yesterday are expected to return to normal trading.

A spokesperson for SSEN Distribution apologised for the impact, adding its teams worked hard to restore supplies as safely and as quickly as possible.

XOKO told customers yesterday: "Super sad to say we can’t open today – swipe [on Facebook] to see the troops trying to prep for tomorrow in the dark. We are trying to salvage what we can and keep the spirits up."

It posted an update late last night: "Unfortunately we have to close until 7am on Tuesday. Due to the power cut today we’ve lost all of our stock and what we’ve been prepping and proving for the coming week so we need to close to restock and refuel and re-create! Thanks for understanding."
