Water supplies are returning to normal.

WATER supplies to hundreds of homes have been restored after an earlier fault saw chlorine levels rise to five times their normal amount.

Around 200 homes and businesses around Strathglass were left without water for several hours following a fault at the Tomich Water Treatment Works (WTW) this morning.

Chlorine levels in the water treatment plant are usually 1mg/l but an alert was triggered for engineers after it hit 5mg/l "for a period of less than two hours – and required us to take action" said Scottish Water.

Communities in upper Strathglass, such as Tomich and Cannich, were among those affected by the outage.

The fault was repaired by early afternoon, but the plant's water tanks needed to be flushed and refilled with fresh water before services could be restored. In the interim, Scottish Water went door-to-door handing out bottled water to residents.

And, shortly after 6.30pm, Scottish Water issued a statement to confirm supplies were now back to normal in the area.

It added that extra water had been brought into the area by road tanker to speed up the recovery of the water network.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We would like to thank customers in Strathglass for their patience today while our local team responded to this issue – and apologise for the disruption to normal service.

“If customers continue to experience a strong odour of chlorine from their water, we would advise them to run their cold kitchen tap at half pressure for a short period and this should improve.

"We are continuing to monitor the WTW and the operation of the local water network closely. If customers continue to experience any issues beyond this evening, we would encourage them to contact us so we can investigate.”

Customers in need of any additional advice or support can contact Scottish Water by calling 0800 077 8778 or via its main social media channels.
