HUNDREDS of homes were without water this afternoon after a fault at a treatment works.

Supplies in upper Strathglass, including those in the villages of Tomich and Cannich, were lost after a higher level of chlorine than normal was detected by monitoring equipment

Scottish Water says engineers are on site at the Tomich Water Treatment Works and are aiming to restore normal water supplies to around 200 homes and businesses in the area.

The company has advised customers to use bottled water, which it says is being provided until the "odour of chlorine is no longer evident".

It added that its engineers have already fixed the initial fault, but now draining the water storage tank that supplies the network in order to introduce fresh drinking water into local supplies.

This is expected to result in customers experiencing low water pressure and loss of supply until the network recovers, which Scottish Water said was expected to be by 5pm this afternoon.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We would like to apologise to customers in Strathglass who have experienced a higher than normal taste of chlorine in their drinking water this morning.

“Our local team is working to remedy the issue as quickly as possible, but this will result in customers experiencing low water pressure and loss of supply for a period.

“We are doing all we can to minimise the disruption to service and help the water network’s recovery by bringing extra drinking water into the area by road tanker. We are also arranging distribution of bottled water to all customers in the area affected to provide an alternative supply until the issue is resolved.”
