Two people were treated by paramedics after escaping a blaze in a four-storey building in Inverness city centre.

Seven fire crews attended the huge fire in the basement floor of the Escobar Mexican premises near the junction of Academy Street and Queensgate.

Two ambulance crews also attended but the condition of those treated is not known.

The alarm was raised just after 3pm this afternoon, with eye-witnesses describing huge plumes of thick black smoke billowing from windows of the eaterie's ground floor.

Occupants of the commercial premises and nearby residents were evacuated.

The fire is now under control with a reduced number of firefighters now at the scene, but occupants have still not been allowed back into their properties.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 3.06pm on Thursday, 29 September to reports of a fire affecting a commercial property on Queengate, Inverness.

"Operations Control mobilised seven appliances to the scene, where a fire was affecting the basement of a four-storey building.

"Two casualties have been handed in the care of paramedics.

"A number of firefighters remain in attendance as they work to make the area safe."

A police spokesman said Police Scotland had been involved in a traffic management basis only, with Academy Street and smaller adjacent roads closed for a period of time.

Academy Street has since re-opened to traffic.
