A large police presence in an Inverness neighbourhood was sparked by a hit-and-run incident in the city centre, police have revealed.

Around 10 police cars and vans were spotted on Kessock Road in South Kessock on Thursday morning, and officers could be seen either side of a block of flats.

Asked what had prompted the large police response, officers later revealed that they were investigating a hit-and-run that had taken place elsewhere in the city earlier in the day.

Responding to requests for details, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 8.50am on Thursday, August 24, police were called to a report of a cyclist struck by a van on Greig Street, Inverness.

"The vehicle didn't stop at the time and police enquiries are ongoing to trace the occupants.

"Anyone with information that may assist our enquiries should contact 101 quoting reference 0685 of 24 August."

Although they did not say what police were investigating in South Kessock in relation to the Greig Street incident, aerial photos to the rear of buildings in Kessock Road showed a grey van with a damaged windscreen parked on open grass land.

It is not known if the cyclist was injured, but the Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed that it did not attend the Greig Street incident.
