A large emergency response involving ambulances, fire crews, a boat team and police was sparked by concern for a "person in the Caledonian Canal", police have confirmed.

Two ambulances, a critical care paramedic, two fire appliances, and police officers were called to the canal in Inverness at around 9.40am on Tuesday morning.

Confirming the nature of the incident, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of concern for a person in the Caledonian Canal in Inverness shortly after 9.40am on Tuesday."

They added: “Emergency services are in attendance and enquiries are ongoing.”

Earlier the Scottish Ambulance Service said: "We received a call today at 9.38am to attend an incident in Inverness. We dispatched two ambulances and a critical care paramedic to the scene.”

And the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service added that it received a call at 9.48am and had dispatched two appliances and a boat team.

Neither had further details about the incident at the time.

The condition of the person reported to be in the canal was not known at the time of writing.
