Highland Council has said a diversion route in place after a vehicle crashed into a building on Pumpgate Street will continue for another month.

The local authority is working with the owners of the former William Hill to ensure all repairs to the building are carried out. In the meantime over concerns for public safety, the road remains closed, with a marked diversion in place.

Last week the council changed the route of the diversion.

A spokesman for Highland Council said: "Temporary diversions and traffic management measures continue to be in place in the Merkinch area of Inverness while works are taking place to make safe the external and internal structure of a building damaged by a vehicle.

"Stage three internal propping works in the basement of the damaged building are complete.

"The council has adjusted temporary diversions and traffic management measures to ensure that main streets and not side streets are favoured for traffic.

"All vehicles drivers should follow the diversionary signs and adhere to all speed limits in place for the next month following which the traffic management will be reviewed."

The spokesman added: "Highland Council is working with building owners in Merkinch to ensure that all necessary repairs are carried out.

"Responsibility for building repairs and re-instatement of the building lies with the owners."
