Serious road accident partially closes A96 near Inverness

A two-vehicle accident has partially closed the A96 near Inverness.

Police, fire and paramedic crews were called to the scene near Newton of Petty shortly before 4pm.

It is not yet known if there were casualties.

Heavy traffic has been backing up with police saying the road is closed to westbound traffic only on the Aberdeen to Inverness route.

Earlier, Traffic Scotland indicated the road was blocked in both directions.

It is understood firefighters used cutting equipment on vehicles involved in the collision.

The incident happened between Newton of Petty and Tornagrain, close to the Balloch junction.

Officers remain at the scene.

In a statement, a police spokeswoman said: “We were made aware of a crash involving two cars on the A96 near the Balloch junction around 3.50pm on Friday, November 10.

“Emergency services are currently at the scene and the road is closed westbound.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: “We received the call to attend at the A96 in the area of Dalcross at 3.55 pm and mobilised five appliances, including a heavy rescue unit.

“Firefighters used hydraulic cutting gear, small hand tools and a rescue board as part of our assistance.”
