Highland Council is contacting owners of vandalised gravestones to discuss repair options.

It comes after several incidents of vandalism, specifically at Tomnahurich Cemetery in Inverness.

Several gravestones have been toppled, six wheelie bins have been set on fire and two benches have been destroyed.

"The headstones are not owned by Highland Council and the local authority is currently contacting insurers and owners to discuss repair options.”

Yesterday, the local authority said: "The emotional distress to relatives of the deceased is totally unacceptable."

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
