A beloved children attraction in Inverness will remain closed until further notice after the heavy rains left its facilities flooded – both indoors and outdoors.

Ness Islands Railway, run by the Highland Hospice, will be closed until water levels recede to open for the last rides of the season safely.

The torrential rains which impacted communities and infrastructure across the Highlands last weekend have left the rail tracks submerged, with standing water also inside the railway's premises.

On a recent post on Facebook, a spokesperson said: "Despite the recent floods, our spirits are high at Ness Islands Railways!

"The railway is currently under water due to heavy rainfall, but we're undeterred. Sorry we won’t be open today but a round of applause for Jim and Brian for their quick thinking. They moved our cherished rolling stock to the container, ensuring its protection."

"While this week's plans might need a bit of adjusting, we're looking forward to welcoming you all back later during the holidays! Once our rolling stock is safely returned and water levels recede, we’ll be ready for the last rides of the season."

The team of volunteers said they will be back with more updates in the coming days.
