The festive season has officially kicked off in Nairn with crowds gathering in the town centre yesterday for the awaited lights switch-on.

Starting the countdown to Christmas, yesterday saw a line up of events to bring everyone some festive cheer.

From two Christmas markets to a Santa's Grotto, circus performances and storytime sessions and live music throughout the day, the community came together to kick off the festive season in style.

Excitement was in the air as families and friends filled the High Street for the Christmas lights switch-on countdown.

Local mum Fiona, together with her children Theo and Poppy, said this was always an event to cherish: "It's been really good. It's amazing how everyone gets involved in this.

"Today is always the day that I feel like 'It's finally Christmas!"

Nairn BID manager Lucy Harding said the event wouldn't have been possible without the efforts of the volunteers, local businesses and everyone that came to visit and take part on the day.

She said: "It was fantastic. Lots of volunteers, stall holders, and everyone that came along t the community centre and on the High street.

"Now the countdown is complete and we can start the Christmas shopping! All over Nairn there are some fantastic gift ideas to be found."

The next date on the Christmas calendar is the Christmas Carols concert at the bandstand on December 14.
