Nairnites young and old gathered today for a town party as the Christmas lights were switched on today.

The High Street was full of cheer after a day of Christmas shopping and events as the town marked the start of the festive period.

A market with stalls of local crafts, open air theatre, face painting and more entertainment was on for the occasion.

Children had the chance to meet Santa on the day ahead of the 4pm countdown.

Nairn BID manager Lucy Harding said this could not have been possible without the support of the community.

"I believe this is our biggest event ever," she said.

"It was fantastic. Lots of volunteers, stall holders, and everyone that came along t the community centre and on the High street.

"We had fire breathers and all kinds of entertainment today so we are really delighted.

"Now the countdown is complete and we can start the Christmas shopping! All over Nairn there are some fantastic gift ideas."

Coming in the near future will also be a Christmas Carol concert to be held at the Wallace Bandstand on December 14.
