HOSPITAL radio presenters in Inverness are the king and queen of the airwaves after tasting awards success in a national broadcasting competition.

Inverness Hospital Radio's Shannon Marvell picked up the bronze award in the best newcomer category and also placed inside the final top five for the best female presenter honour in the National Hospital Broadcasting Association Awards.

And fellow volunteer Thomas Nelson collected the silver award in the best male presenter category.

The pair's awards were announced at a gala dinner at the broadcasting association's annual conference this spring.

Shannon Marvell, who is also the social media co-ordinator for the station, said: “The recognition that the station got on the night was phenomenal and everyone that is a part of the station should be proud of what we have achieved the past year. I almost fell off my chair when my name was called out!

"Not only did we come back with a couple of trophies, we’ve also been able to spend the weekend into looking how we can improve station output and made a lot of contacts on the way.

"Radio is what I want to do, and I put 110 per cent of myself into every role I have. I have so many ideas to bring the station closer to our patients as well as out to the community and I’m looking forward to seeing what next year has to offer.”

Thomas Nelson, who is also the chairman of Inverness Hospital Radio, added: “I was already exceptionally proud to receive a nomination for best male presenter at this year’s awards ceremony.

"While I don’t volunteer as hospital radio presenter for awards, it is warming to receive recognition from peers that I am doing something well. To then be judged by a panel comprising senior NHS workers and leading figures in national broadcasting against an amazing collection of nominees from across the UK and be given a silver award was staggering.

"I must acknowledge that without the efforts of so many dedicated volunteers over the 50-plus years of Inverness Hospital Radio I would not have been in any position to be considered for an award and I am grateful to everyone who puts so much into our service to patients and the community.”
