Nairn firefighters were back this year to spread some festive cheer around local communities.

A Nairn fire station tradition for the past six years, Santa's Sleigh sees members of the crew visiting communities in their catchment area to bring some festive fun, candies and to raise money for local causes.

Last year, the initiative raised £13,000 for various charities, with the part of the proceeds given to causes particularly in need of support.

Crew commander James Kellas – who performs as The Grinch – said their target this year is looking promising.

"I think it's just great to see that people are still supporting the cause, despite the raising costs for everyone," he said.

"It's surprising that we are able to raise as much as in the past years, we are so grateful to everyone that helped and it's a testament to the generosity of the local community.

"For us it's great to meet people from the communities we serve and be able to engage with them and bring some festive cheer to the children we meet.

"Although sometimes it can be stressful to run this on top of our regular duties, it's really good fun for us and it's great to be able to give back to the community."

One of the last causes supported by last year's funds saw the initiative supporting a church giving vouchers to people in need.
Since its start, the initiative has raised more than £50,000 and contributed to install five defibrillators – two of which have been put to use, said Mr Kellas.

All of the 19 members of the fire station team help out with the sleigh run – be it rain, snow or whatever the conditions allow.
