Two Inverness-based charities welcomed a donation of more than £129,000 to be split between them after an auction.

The Big Highland Auction took place at Dingwall and Highland Marts in November, and in one day managed to raise the huge sum for Maggie’s Highland and the Highland Hospice.

A cheque was presented to each charity this week and they were delighted to go home with £64,530 each, beating the total target of £125,000.

Of 496 donated items, the highest selling was a quad bike gifted by Frank Nicol, which sold for £7200. The massive list of items up for auction ranged from a Manchester United shirt signed by Cristiano Ronaldo to a pedigree bull and holiday breaks to bottles of whisky.

A spokesman for Dingwall and Highland Marts said: “A huge thank you to everyone involved and a massive thank you to all our staff who helped make this sale a great success – we can’t operate as a business without this very dedicated team.”
