A popular city café announced a temporary closure after a kitchen appliance caught fire earlier this morning.

Café V8 on Henderson Road will be closed today to clear up the damage – however they confirmed that this was contained and no one was injured.

Head chef David Kennedy said he was preparing to open the café – with opening times starting at 7am – when the hot plate caught fire at around 6.10am.

He said: "I tried to put the fire out with the extinguisher but I soon realised it had become too much for me to tackle, and I would have had to take the hot plate apart.

"I called the fire services and they arrived promptly and the fire was soon extinguished."

Café manager David MacDougall added that the damage was contained to the hot plate and did not impact the rest of the building.

He said: "We are now in the process of cleaning up and checking everything is ok and and hopefully we'll be open again tomorrow."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at around 6.38am, it was a hot plate at the premises that caught fire.

"We sent two appliances from Inverness and the fire was extinguished. The stop call came at 7.27am after which we left the scene."
