THE work of an Inverness artist was gifted to an Edinburgh military department to commemorate the famous One O'clock Gun.

Renowned artist and UHI art lecturer Frank To has handed over his latest work depicting the historic landmark to the gunner unit.

For this work, Mr To's worked with gunpowder from the gun itself as a drawing material.

Mr To said: "By manipulating the residue into an art medium, I was able to use this to create the piece.

"This gun, of course, it not used for violent means and so it was an ideal focus for reinforcing my message. I hope that what I do will inspire people to think twice about the value of life and how we can all channel our energy constructively."

District Gunner Sergeant Dave Beveridge, said: "When Frank told us he wanted to produce an artwork based on the gun we were absolutely delighted.

"It's always encouraging when others recognise the importance of the gun which is an important part, not only of Scotland's history, but of daily life in the city."

Mr To is currently working on the Humanian Metal Initiative, an international peace project which involves collecting illegal firearms and melting them to produce a new alloy.
