The council has confirmed it has advised schools to cancel all school trips to anywhere apart from the Highlands due to the coronavirus situation.

A spokeswoman for the Highland Council said it understands the decision would cause disappointment.

It comes after Cradlehall Primary School posted a statement on its website revealing the local authority had advised school trips should be cancelled due to coronavirus.

The school's statement reads: "We have been advised by Highland Council that all excursions outwith the authority which have been planned for this current school year are to be cancelled owing to the Covid-19 [coronavirus] outbreak. More information will be provided to parents on Monday."

A council spokeswoman said this afternoon that the local authority's chief executive Donna Manson had pointed out it was no longer business as usual on Friday.

She added: "We have written to all schools on Friday to advise that based on national guidance all school trips outwith Highland up until the end of summer term are to be cancelled.

"Welfare of our pupils and staff is paramount and we are continuing to follow national advice and direction in our decision making.

"We really understand the disappointment this will cause for many but a concern is that students and staff could be stranded or at risk in the rapidly changing global situation."
