An Inverness councillor has described a new pedestrian-controlled crossing as "another major step forward for road safety on the west side of the city".

Cllr Alex Graham (Inverness West, Scottish Liberal Democrats) was speaking as the second such crossing on the A82 Glenurquhart Road became operational.

The work was by Bear Scotland and Cllr Graham said: “This crossing has been busy since it was switched on. This is real proof that it was desperately needed.

"Working with council colleagues Cllr Bill Boyd and Cllr Graham Ross, as well as local residents, there has been a lengthy campaign for safer road crossing on the A82.

“It started more than 10 years ago when Pauline Munro and Alasdair Christie were then the other local councillors, and to be honest we never thought it would take so long. It pays to be persistent.

"Crossing places on Glenurquhart Road have always been a priority for local people, and now that they’re in place, road safety on the west side of Inverness has been significantly improved.

“The new crossings will be especially welcome when schools begin to re-open later this month. Central Primary is very close to the Montague Row crossing while St Joseph's Primary and Inverness High School are also nearby.

"Another pedestrian crossing was completed last year just a few hundred yards away at the Smith junction, and Bear Scotland still have a number of improvements in their programme for nearby Tomnahurich Street and Kenneth Street.

“We greatly appreciate the recent willingness of Transport Scotland to consider road safety needs in this area, and the efficient way in which Bear Scotland staff have approached the installation works in difficult circumstances."
