A long-awaited new pedestrian crossing on one of Inverness’s busiest roads has finally been completed.

The crossing on Glenurquhart Road, at the Scotmid Co-op store, was implemented after a long campaign by locals worried about road safety.

It is the first of two sets of lights being installed on the busy A82, one of Inverness’s major trunk roads but also bordered by busy residential areas.

Inverness West councillor Bill Boyd said: “I and my council colleagues, encouraged by Ballifeary Community Council, have been campaigning for years for this to be made available. It is great to see that it is finally open.”

Chairwoman of Ballifeary Community Council Helen Smith said: “We campaigned for years to get this crossing and we are delighted that it is finally here.

“It will make things so much easier and safer for people of all ages who need to cross this busy road.

“We hope that there will now be quick progress on getting the other promised new crossings at Montague Row and the Kenneth Street junction completed as these are also sorely needed.”

A spokeswoman for BEAR Scotland, which carried out the work, said: “We’re pleased to have the first crossing open for users.”
