AN INVERNESS music store was mobbed as crowds turned out to see popular Stornoway band Peat & Diesel perform live during a three-hour visit.

HMV in the Eastgate Shopping Centre hosted the three-piece band which released its new album Light My Byre last week.

As well as performing a range of numbers, the band's members spent time chatting to fans and signing items including CDs, boiler suits, wellingtons and even a diesel can.

Their appearance came the day after the band appeared at a sellout gig at Glasgow's Barrowlands Ballroom just 18 months after the trio – fisherman Callum MacLeod, electrician Innes Scott and delivery driver Uilleam MacLeod – first performed in a Lewis pub.

Paul Kennedy, HMV store manager was delighted by the band's appearance.

"It was an amazing event," he said. "For the band to travel up here the morning after their sellout Barrowlands show, play seven songs to a packed store and then stay almost three hours signing CDs for everyone is just tremendous and we cannot thank everyone enough."

Peat & Diesel was the first band to appear this year under the HMV Live and Local banner which Mr Kennedy hopes will become will become a regular showcase for other emerging musicians across the Highlands and Islands.

Centre manager Jackie Cuddy said: “Having live music in the centre really enhances the ambience and brings the crowds. It would be great to have more live music in the centre.

"However, as far as the bigger personal appearances go, our location – which is not on the main tour circuit – sometimes limits us getting access to these.

"But certainly we would look at taking more if they were available and we will continue to work closely with LCC Live helping promote their concerts in the Highlands.”
