Peat & Diesel plus Chinese lion dance on the bill at Eastgate Shopping Centre in Inverness

POPULAR Stornoway band Peat & Diesel will perform at the Eastgate Shopping Centre in Inverness on Sunday.

The band's appearance will be among a packed weekend programme of events in the centre which will also include a traditional

Chinese lion dance on Saturday to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Peat & Diesel, a three-piece band whose songs often make reference to crofting activities on the isles, won the best live act award at last month's MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards.

The band will appear in-store at HMV to perform and sign copies of their new album, Light my Byre, from 3pm.

Paul Kennedy, HMV store manager, is looking forward to the band's appearance.

"We've sold lots of copies of their debut album, Uptown Fank, and it's great we've got them in-store to perform their new album Light My Byre which is out tomorrow,” he said.

On Saturday, the shopping centre will mark the Chinese New Year with a colourful dance performed by members of Yee’s Hung Ga Kung Fu Academy in Inverness

It starts about 2pm. Members will also perform a kung fu display.

The centre is also hosting a New Year, New You event from 10am to 4pm with a range of sessions taking place mainly at the blue wall across from Waterstones..

Amanda Latham, of Define Style Consultancy, will host a What’s On My Rail workshop. Featuring clothes from various stores, she will providing style tips and hints for differing lifestyles and budgets and will also take bookings for Eastgate’s 90-minute complimentary personal shopping sessions.

Jen Hill, of Toe2Toe dance company, will offer a 20-minute dance aerobics taster session at 10.45am and at 1pm, there will be a 20-minute body attack/combat taster session inspired by mixed martial arts such as karate, boxing, taekwondo, tai chi and muay thai.

In between the taster classes, shoppers can try out small fitness equipment.

DW Fitness First will hand out timetables, goody bags and free day passes while Inverness-based consultants from Slimming World will provide information on shedding the pounds as well as running two prize draws – one for a free food hamper and the other for a 12-week pass to a Slimming World group.

Youngsters can make their own fruit kebabs and smoothies with FITkidz Academy whose founder Amy Mullen will host a talk at 3pm encouraging young children to lead a healthy and active life.

The Fuel Juice Bar will hand out samples of drinks and run colouring activities with the chance to enter a prize draw to win a regular smoothie or super juice from and a £20 Eastgate gift voucher.
