Inverness Outlanders has said it is "thrilled" to announce that author Diana Gabaldon will speak at its commemoration of 275 years since the Battle of Culloden.

Ms Gabaldon, who wrote the Outlander series of books that inspired the TV series of the same name, used Culloden and the Jacobite uprising as the backdrop to her early novels.

Outlander follows Claire Randall, a married British combat nurse who time-travels between World War II and 1743 Scotland, where she falls for a Scottish Jacobite Jamie Fraser.

The commemoration show is to be filmed live at the Culloden Battlefield this Friday.

Inverness Outlanders wrote on its Facebook page: "We are thrilled to announce that Diana Gabaldon will be taking part in our special live show from Culloden Battlefield and Visitor Centre to commemorate the 275th anniversary of the battle.

"We hope you can join us on Friday April 16 at 7pm."

Inverness Outlanders has also set up a fundraising page for a commemorative wreath to be laid during the commemoration service at 1pm on April 16, the same time as the battle started.

"Sadly many people from around the world, including Outlander fans, who had planned to attend the commemoration event at the battlefield will be unable to travel because of Covid restrictions," the group's post said.

"Inverness Outlanders has been given permission to broadcast live on Facebook from Culloden Battlefield on April 16, and we plan to lay a commemorative wreath at the memorial cairn at 1pm, the time the battle commenced.

"We have set up a GoFundMe page for anyone who would like to make a donation and play a virtual part in this significant anniversary year.

"We are only asking for donations to allow as many people as possible to participate.

"All monies received in excess of the cost of the wreath will be donated to Culloden Battlefield and Visitor Centre."
