A SINGER is returning to his home town of Portsoy to showcase his first album.

Craig Souter (25), who now lives in Edinburgh, will be playing tracks from his album, ‘Via Dolorosa’, at the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival this weekend.

For Craig it is the start of getting out of the city and presenting his music to a wider audience.

"I have been playing gigs with my band in Edinburgh for some time, and I am now looking to focus on playing in other parts of the country," he said.

"We played a festival just outside Edinburgh recently, and that went really well. Playing at the boat festival will continue to let people listen to my music who may have never heard it before."

Craig went to Aberdeen College at the age of 19 to study music, and also studied acting for a year. He moved on to Edinburgh’s Napier University, where he gained an honours degree in popular music and met the friends who are now his band.

Working in the city as a technician at the Academy of Music and Sound, he said: "My music is very much acoustic-led, and my friends from university play bass, electric guitar and drums.

"As part of my fourth year project, I recorded an 11-track album which I have called ‘Via Dolorosa’. It plots the journey of a relationship, starting with the happy times; there is then a turn for a worse, and it is resolved by the end.

"I will be playing tracks from it during the festival weekend, and also doing some covers."

Craig will be playing the harbour stage on Saturday afternoon, and closing it on Sunday. He will be at the Station Hotel on Saturday night, and will conduct a songwriting workshop in the Salmon Bothy on Sunday.
