Every week What's On North offers up seven top picks from across the north of Scotland of all the things to do out there in our area. This week's picks include full-hearted fundraising, hardcore heavies, and Lynne-credible tributes.

1 A FUNDRAISING night upstairs at La Tortilla is hoping to bring in some much needed cash and cheer this winter for the local heroes at Mikeysline.

Taking place at the Inverness restaurant on Friday night, Shindigging for Gold will feature music, comedy and theatre from regional creative groups including Bastard Wordiness, Mike’d Up Comedy and The ERKs.

The show starts at 7pm, and entry is by donation. Search Shindigging for Gold on Facebook.

2 HIGHLAND stargazers have a double dose of dark nights and celestial bodies to look forward to.

A night examining the astronomy of eclipses with an opportunity to observe a live penumbra eclipse of the Moon via binoculars and video telescope will take place at Abriachan Forestry Trust on Friday night from 7pm.

And Guest speaker Dr Anthony Luke of UHI will talk about the science and chemistry behind exploding stars at Inverness Sea Cadets Hall on Thursday night - with opportunities for stargazing from the local nature reserve if conditions are clear.

3 DARK nights are drawing in at the Tooth and Claw, as two hardcore heavies line up for a raucous night at the Inverness venue.

Aberdeen’s Bitterwood and Leeds-based Deceiver are teaming up for a string of Scottish dates over the weekend, bringing the brutality to the Highland capital on Friday night. Support will come from The Vandal.

Doors open at 7pm. For more info, search Long Arm Promotions on Facebook.

4 PUNK rock prolesthytisers The Signal line up their first gig of the year in their favourite hometown haunt.

The Inverness four-piece will melt the frost with a baltic barnstormer at the Market Bar on Saturday night.

The gig starts at 10.30pm and entry will be free. For more info, search The Signal on Facebook.

5 ELO ‘elo, what’s all this then? A tribute band to UK prog’s shining lights are set to brighten Elgin Town Hall this weekend.

ELO Again, a tribute to Jeff Lynn and the Electric Light Orchestra, will bring the big hits of the rock legends to the Moray venue on Saturday night. Expect Mr Blue Sky, Livin’ Thing, Sweet Talkin’ Woman, and more.

Doors open at 7pm and tickets cost £25 - go to www.elgintownhall.co.uk

6 TWO open mic events happening in Inverness over the next week will give performers of all sorts the chance to shake off the creative cobwebs.

The monthly Market Bar open mic returns on Sunday afternoon from 4pm, and offers people of all creative disciplines the chance to come up on stage and showcase their talents.

And Thursday night sees the fortnightly Tooth and Claw event return, taking place from 8.30pm and offering a similarly relaxed environment.

Both events are free entry. Search Facebook for more details.

7 SCHOOL is back in session at Eden Court, as the vast majority of its classes start up again over the next week.

From dance to drama, singing to computer animation, the Inverness theatre has opportunities for a wide range of creative pursuits running from now.
