Every week What's On North offers up seven top picks from across the north of Scotland of all the things to do out there in our area. This week's picks include a rapper's delight, a festive vibe, and a traditional Boxing Day...

1 A NEW club night celebrating positive hip hop and the music it came from is set for the Upstairs club thanks to Karawane.

The Highland world music collective brings its special one-off night Uptown to the Inverness club, as Mark 92 and Skeetz are joined by guest DJ Butterscotch for a night of funk and soul jams through the samples that built the genre.

Doors open on the night at 9pm and entry costs £5. For full details, go to www.karawane.co.uk

2 FESTIVE frolics are being promised in the heart of Moray in the run up to Christmas Day with Lossie Entertainment Academy.

The theatre school – who formed in 1997 as The Classical Dance Centre – will put on its winter warmer Disney at Christmas in Elgin Town Hall from Saturday to Tuesday.

Each night’s performance begins at 7.30pm, and tickets cost £12 (£10 concession).Go to www.elgintownhall.co.uk

3 IT wouldn’t be the Christmas season without a panto – and Macdonald Aviemore Resort have been getting in on the action this month with a raucous Robinson Crusoe.

The tale of the heroic captain of the Good Ship Lizzie promises an action-packed adventure with a shipwreck, treasure and everything audiences expect from a great panto, with performances on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Each day’s performance starts at 2pm and tickets cost £12 (£40 family). Go to www.macdonaldspeyvalleycinema.co.uk

4 MAD Friday this year is about to get even madder when some of the north’s best DJ talents descend on the Tooth and Claw for one night only.

Vibe’s Merry Christmash Up features B2B sets from Alan Matheson and Flynn; Robbie Dunlop and Aron Wright; Josh Ross and Grigor; and Ckaz and Ramie Gold; as well as a solo slot from Matt Lyon.

The doors open at 9pm and tickets cost £5 on the door. Search Vibe Merry Christmash Up on Facebook.

5 TWO more days remain of this year’s Eden Court show for young ones, with Crunch marching up the garden path this Friday and Saturday.

The same team who brought the Inverness theatre’s previous kids’ festive shows (Little Lamp and Frosty’s Allotment) return with a show about braving the first snow of winter to find the perfect crunch.

There are multiple shows each day and tickets cost £9.50 (£7.50 under-12s). Go to www.eden-court.co.uk

6 HIGHLAND trad stars Hò-rò are offering a festive treat to Hootananny revellers this Boxing Day – with a special concert.

The young folk heroes will warm things up at the Inverness pub on Thursday night fresh off the back of their two-night stint at the Ironworks at the start of last month.

The gig starts at 9.30pm, and entry is free. For more info, go to www.musichoro.com

7 HOT-headed and warm-hearted fundraisers will be cooling off at Burghead this Boxing Day – with the return of the now-traditional Burghead Boxing Day Swim.

The annual charity event returns to the Moray town on Thursday and will see brave (or foolhardy) swimmers brave the icy water at Burghead Harbour to raise cash for three nominated charities – this year Burghead Sub Aqua Club, Kieran’s Legacy, and Marie Curie.

The event kicks off at 2.30pm – go to www.burgheadboxingdayswim.com
