Scottish Glass Society celebrates 40 year anniversary with On the Edge exhibition featuring range of artists from across country at North Lands Creative, Lybster

CELEBRATING 40 years of artworks, the Scottish Glass Society has decided to mark this milestone with a special exhibition in the home of Highland glassblowing – Caithness.
On the Edge – a juried exhibition by the group – will be hosted at Lybster’s North Lands Creative from Monday, July 8 until Friday, July 26.
The exhibition will feature 18 artists in total – including Inverness’s Catherine Carr, who will be displaying her textile-inspired crocheted glass designs.
She said: "I am thrilled to be part of this special exhibition, which celebrates 40 years of the Scottish Glass Society. It will be a truly exciting demonstration of the amazing work being produced by glass artists throughout Scotland.
"My fellow participants are all artists at the height of their creative powers and are hugely influential in the art glass world, boldly resisting any limitations on glass as an art form.
"In my own work, I am subverting and contrasting the idea of textiles being soft and homely by using glass as a material, which when worked becomes a solid form yet retains all the delicacy and look of the textile.
"I explore the line between women's work in history against the value placed on women's work today, especially in the art world."
Other artists who will be displaying at the exhibition are Gregory Alliss, Carolyn Basing, Hannah Gibson, Siobhan Healy, Jessamy Kelly, Alison Kinnaird, Pinkie Maclure, Brett Manley, Inge Panneels, Lauren Puckett, Annica Sandström and David Kaplan, Cathryn Shilling, Amanda Simmons, Moonju Suh, Laura Turner and Rosheen Young.
North Lands is a studio and gallery organisation focussing on the production and presentation of contemporary glass. Its director, Karen Phillips, was on the jury alongside National Museums Scotland curator for modern contemporary and designs Sarah Rothwell and Scottish Glass Society chairwoman Catherine Lowe.
Speaking about the exhibition’s launch, Catherine Lowe said: “I'm delighted that we are starting the celebration of our 40th year with our On the Edge exhibition at North Lands Creative.
“What you see today are exemplary exhibits from 18 artists that show the diversity and range of glass practice in Scotland.
“Scottish Glass Society champions the work of Scotland-based artists and our membership includes artists who studied here, have Scottish connections, a keen interest in glass art associated with Scotland, or who simply want to be a part of the society.”
She added: "What you see in this exhibition is a vibrant and diverse group of highly visual work all using glass as the primary artistic material.
“We are grateful to the generous supported by Creative Scotland, Northlands Creative and a number of individual trust funds who have donated to the Scottish Glass Societies 40th anniversary celebrations.”
