THREE hours of vintage and fresher Monty Python comedy comes almost live from London’s O2 to Highland cinema screens next Sunday (July 20).
In Inverness both Eden Court and Vue plus Thurso Cinema will be showing Monty Python: Live (Mostly) at 7pm.
It’s one of the highest-profile London shows to screen in the Highlands – but coming soon there will also be the chance to see live Q& A discussions with stars like Stephen Fry, Nick Cave and Al Pacino, plus a live Belle and Sebastian performance.
More of the already successful live screening productions from the National Theatre, Royal Opera House, English National Opera and the Royal Shakespeare Company are also on their way.
Skylight is the next National Theatre play being shown in Inverness at both Eden Court and cinema Vue next Thursday (July 17) at 7pm and also at Thurso Cinema, same day and same time.
Film and TV star Bill Nighy acts alongside young actress Carey Mulligan in the revived love reunion drama by top dramatist David Hare.
The chance to see big shows is being snapped up by Highland audiences, Eden Court’s film programmer Paul Taylor confirmed.
"I couldn’t be more delighted about the wide range of live content that is being beamed into cinemas," he said.
"Cinema has been going for 120 years, so in order to keep finding new, and different, audiences being able to say ‘And Now For Something Completely Different’ – as the Pythons’ would have said – is important.
"Coming up in the next couple of months we will have Q&A/discussions with Stephen Fry, Nick Cave and Al Pacino, live performances from Belle & Sebastian - after showing Stuart Murdoch’s own film God Help The Girl -as well as continuing with productions by National Theatre, Royal Opera House, ENO and RSC.
Next Saturday (July 19) at 7pm, Inverness Vue will show Andre Rieu’s Concert from Vrijthof Square in Maastricht – the Viennese Waltz Orchestra maestro’s home town – to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the summer concert series. As Rieu’s latest CD has a Venetian theme, he has ensured a spectacular backdrop for the live screening with the whole Doge’s Palace from Venice copied and built on the Vrijthof!
It’s back to classical theatre for Eden Court with the Royal Shakespeare Company’s The Two Gentlemen Of Verona on September 3.
And a day later, the National Theatre’s Medea starring actress Helen McCrory will feature specially-written music by Goldfrapp’s Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory.
Encore screenings of Monty Python Mostly Live (July 31) and Medea (September 28 to 30) give more people the chance to catch the shows.
Paul Taylor said: "Audiences in the Highlands wouldn’t otherwise get a chance to see any of this without the expense of going to London.
"It’s an exciting move by cinemas and I hope that it continues."
