Along For The Ride (Netflix)
Based on the novel by Sarah Dessen, Along For The Ride opens as Auden (Emma Pasarow) spends her final summer before college in the picturesque coastal community Colby Beach. While other teenagers sunbathe and make lasting friendships, insomniac Auden retreats from the world until night falls when she roams the streets, alone with her thoughts. On one of these escapades, Auden encounters mysterious fellow insomniac Eli (Belmont Cameli). He encourages Auden to experience the rites of passage of her childhood dreams while the rest of Colby Beach slumbers. The teenagers’ deep emotional bond inspires them to stop living in the shadows. Kate Bosworth, Dermot Mulroney and Andie MacDowell co-star.
The Essex Serpent (Apple TV+)
The latest drama series is based on Sarah Perry’s bestselling, 2016 British Book Award-winning work. set in 1893 and focusing on newly-widowed Cora. Rather than being grief-stricken by her husband’s death, she feels liberated – theirs was an abusive marriage. Keen to make a fresh start, Cora leaves her London home, swapping it for the small village of Aldwinter in Essex. But it’s a place with a local superstition involving a mythical creatur. Claire Danes and Tom Hiddleston star.
Clark (Netflix)
Bill Skarsgard, who sent chills down the spine as Pennywise the clown in the two-part film adaptation of Stephen King’s It, portrays a more charming villain in a Swedish series directed by Jonas Akerlund.
Inspired by the infamous Swedish bank robber, who gave rise to the expression Stockholm Syndrome, the six-part drama draws inspiration from truths and lies in Clark Olofsson’s autobiography to chart his love affair with the Swedish people, despite dozens of bank robberies and various counts of drug trafficking, attempted murder, assault and theft.
