The re-release of one of the films by German-born American director Ernst Lubitsch was the deciding factor for Inverness Film Fans in devoting their next season to his films.
The Shop Around The Corner is being re-released on Friday, December 3, but it will be shown as part of the season on Tuesday, December 14.
Design For Living is the first film in the season, shown on Monday (November 29).
Made in 1933, it’s screenplay is by Ben Hecht – who worked on everything from Gone With The Wind to His Girl Friday – adapting Noel Coward. A woman and the two men she can’t decide between end up living together platonically. The cast is Gary Cooper, Miriam Hopkins and Fredric March.
The Shop Around The Corner, from 1940, stars James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan who play shop assistants in a grand store in Budapest who don’t like each other, but don’t know each is writing letters to the other – You’ve Got Mail later used it.
Angel stars Marlene Dietrich in the story of a love triangle, as a neglected wife.
Ninotchka stars Greta Garbo and Melvyn Douglas and Billy Wilder was one of the writers for what was Greta Garbo’s first full comedy playing a Russian agent sent to Paris to retrieve some jewellery.
InFiFa say: “Expect four evenings of sparkling sophistication with drama, romance and comedy to chase some wintry blues away, with some of the biggest starts of the day – Gary Cooper, Miriam Hopkins, James Stewart, Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo.”
