Chieftain Comedy Club night will showcase nine performers

The first Chieftain Comedy Club meeting of 2023 sees a line-up of both established and new performers take to the stage at the Chieftain Hotel, Inverness on Thursday (February 2).
The club which had its first night last April, was planned to bring on new stand up and comedy writing talent.
And this latest meeting of the monthly night will feature nine of the best comedy performers in the Highlands and Islands today. And the event will include stand up, poetry and musical comedy acts.
“It’s really heartening to have such a varied line up,” said Gary Campbell, the club’s chairman. “And as always, we as a club give them a chance to polish some existing routines and introduce new material.”
On the night The Mad Old Punk, ‘Shogun’ Joe Sweeney, Matt Black, Mulbert and Hazel Urquhart will add to sets that featured at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe. They’ll be joined by established local comedian and playwright Kieran J E Lochore and Annie MacDonald, another stalwart of the local scene.
Completing the line-up will be Caleb Thomas, Iain Duncan and Tom Cairns, all of whom started their comedy journey in the last few months.
“The club continues to go from strength to strength and we’re delighted that the purpose that we set out last year has worked so well,” explained Mr Campbell, who himself performs stand up comedy routines as Gary Aye. “Already this year, our members are being asked to appear at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe again and some of our guys who perform as The Seriously Funny Comedy Show are booked to perform at the Glasgow International Comedy Festival.”
Other club participants are being asked to perform in the northern and western isles and a club tour of the North West Highlands is mooted for this summer.
The club’s creative convener ‘Shogun’ Joe Sweeney added: “The club has been a huge success. As well as giving us all a suppportive and safe space to develop our material, the cameraderie amongst us all is second to none as we all support each other, no matter what stage in our career we are at.”
The club night is at the Chieftain Hotel on Thursday, February 2 at 8pm, and is free. May contain adult themes.
