Inverness Caledonian Thistle have hit the headlines in an unusual fashion – after being namedropped by WWE superstar Drew McIntyre.

The Caley Jags are currently focused on securing their Championship status for next season, as they travel to Montrose tonight for the first leg of their play-off semi final.

However, they have hit national prominence from their time in the top flight, and reaching multiple cup finals – most recently in last season’s Scottish Cup, where they lost to Celtic at Hampden Park.

That prompted McIntyre, the first ever Scottish WWE champion and a Rangers fan, to come up with Caley Thistle when asked to compare rival CM Punk to a Scottish football team.

In an interview with the Daily Star, McIntyre said: “What’s a team that just constantly has players that hurt themselves and get injured – Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

“I don’t know why they’re popping into my head. I’m trying to think of a team that had a random bit of glory a couple of times and live off of that. That would be Celtic, wouldn’t it?”

McIntyre started his professional wrestling career in Scotland, best known here for his time with Glasgow-based promotion Insane Championship Wrestling.

The 38-year-old from Ayr would initially move to America to sign with WWE in 2007, but would find the most success after being out of WWE for a few years and returning to the company in 2017.

He would go on to win the 2020 Royal Rumble, and defeat former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar at that year’s Wrestlemania to win his first WWE title.

Since then, he has been one of the biggest stars in the company, and this year has been engaged in an ongoing war of words with the legendary CM Punk – who attacked McIntyre after another world title win at this year’s Wrestlemania, costing him the title.
