THE winners of tomorrow’s Camanachd Cup final will be allowed to take the trophy home with them — but have been warned to handle it with care.

It was intimated last month that teams might not be trusted to keep any trophies they win after Glenurquhart players broke the Macaulay Cup within 36 hours of receiving it.

The Drumnadrochit side — which claimed its first national cup victory in its 127-year history — dented the trophy during their celebrations and then someone snapped the stem while trying to fix it.

Photos of the damaged trophy appeared on social networking website Facebook — where the Macaulay Association became aware of the situation. The club swiftly wrote a formal apology to the association and offered to pay for repairs.

Although a review of the situation is still ongoing, the sport’s governing body, the Camanachd Association will allow one of the sport’s main prizes to be taken away by the winners of the clash between Inverary and Kyles Athletic in Oban.

“They will be able to take the trophy home with them but we have to be very clear about what is required of them,” said Torquil Macleod, chief operating officer at the Camanachd Association, who expected they would be allowed to look after it for 12 months.

“It is extremely important to keep trophies cared for. It is a shared responsibility just now, but we trust the clubs to look after them and on the whole they are very good.”
