The 18-year-old running back delivered an impressive performance in a 14-7 loss at Meadowbank Stadium.
The Inverness-based side took the lead in the first quarter after driving back the hosts’ defence for seven minutes, largely due to running back James Pyke’s progression into Wolves’ territory.
The pressure paid off when Maclennan made it into the end zone. Martin Devlin extended the lead with a conversion.
Wolves attempted to hit back instantly, but their offense was stopped when Stephen Nelson intercepted on the two-yard line for Wildcats.
The visitors’ defense was strong throughout with Billy Mill, Norbert Ferenc and Liam Mackenzie getting sacks on the Wolves’ quarterback.
But the hosts managed to level with a converted touchdown at the mid-point of the second quarter and took the lead in the third quarter.
Wildcats’ attempts at reducing arrears were thwarted, despite quarterback Roddy Ross connecting with passes to Neil Porter and Ewan Straiton, while Devlin’s field goal attempt was off target.
The hosts failed to add to their lead in the closing moments, but the Wildcats’ efforts to notch a second touchdown were also fruitless.
“It was a valiant performance from the lads at the home of the defending champions,” said Wildcats head coach Brian MacRae.
“We were focused throughout and managed to keep shut-outs in two of the four quarters and didn’t deserve to lose.
“Next up is a trip to league leaders West Coast Trojans, so we need to take as many positives from this as we can because we know it will be tough against them.”
