RAIN and snow threaten the pre-season schedule of friendlies with several matches facing early morning pitch inspections tomorrow.

Premier sides Glenurquhart and Lovat dust down their camans for the first time ahead of the new season with the Glen entertaining North Division One side Skye, while Lovat have opted to play Oban Camanachd at Mossfield.

The Glen endured a turbulent season in 2013 with their management team and fitness coach all departing at various points in the campaign.

Fans of the black and red hoops will be hoping that the return of former managers David Menzies and Billy Maclean will bring a period of stability ahead of a challenging season in the revamped eight-team Premiership. This match starts at 1.30 pm.

Lovat are looking to appoint a new club president following the surprise resignation of long-standing official Iain Ferguson in midweek.

Ferguson has presided over the most successful period in club’s history since their all-conquering season of 1953.

The Kiltarlity side have established themselves in the Premiership and last season lifted the MacTavish Cup for the first time in 60 years. Their reserve side has also enjoyed recent triumphs in the Sutherland and Strathdearn Cups.

It is understood that increasing work commitments had a lot to do with Ferguson’s decision. Current vice president John MacRitchie is the favourite to be named his successor.

Oban Celtic are in the Inverness area for the second time this month when they face Strathglass in Cannich with the Murdo MacKenzie Memorial Trophy at stake.

Inverness will also expect to face demanding opposition when National Division One side Glasgow Mid Argyll visit the Bught.

Encouraging victories over Oban Celtic and Aberdour have boosted Allan Macleod’s side, but Mid Argyll will provide a formidable challenge. The reserve sides of the two clubs are scheduled to meet earlier in the day.

Beauly have a difficult challenge themselves when they face Premiership side Kingussie at the Dell. New manager Roger Cormack will use the match to assess his squad, but with no new faces at the club, the team is expected to be along familiar lines.
