A SQUAD made up of Highland players both past and present, going by the name of We Used To Be Good, won the Lauder Cup at the annual Highland 7s tournament.

The blustery wind was only a concern for the organisers and their outdoor facilities, but the day, which was sponsored by the Robertson Group, ran smoothly enough with a large crowd gathered to watch some fine rugby.

The pool matches were hotly contested with the teams to watch quickly becoming apparent.

Highland and Red Hackle Rugby progressed to the Lauder Cup semi-finals as expected and they were joined by We Used To Be Good, who quickly showed that they were not just there for a run out, and Caithness who topped group four, beating one of the pre-tournament favourites Perthshire.

The Highland Shield semi-finals were contested by MacKinnons, Mackie Bears, Isle of Mull and Perthshire, while the Ian Milne Memorial Bowl competition was filled by third placed sides CrossFit 57 North, YoungTeam, Highland Reds and Fort George.

In the Bowl semis, YoungTeam, made up of Highland’s under-18’s, proved too experienced for the novices of 57 North, winning 33-5, while Fort George’s Fijians overan Highland Reds 36-0.

The last four of the Shield saw the Mackie Bears steamroller MacKinnons in a 40-0 victory, and Isle of Mull, with a depleted squad, went down 17-5 to Perthshire.

There were two very hotly contested games in the semi-finals of the Lauder Cup with Highland having to pull out all of the stops to overcome Red Hackle Rugby 19-14, while the skills of We Used To be Good were tested until they steadied nerves to win 22-12 against Caithness.

All of the finals were played on the main pitch at Canal Park where first up was the Bowl contest. Despite the best efforts of Highland’s YoungTeam, Fort George were just that bit stronger and managed to secure a 24-17 success.

In the Shield final, Perthshire eventually managed to see off Mackie Bears 22-14 to collect the Highland Shield, while We Used To Be Good sovercame a jaded Highland 28-7 to claim the Lauder Cup.

Former Highland under-18 player and Scottish international prop Moray Law was on hand to give out the trophies and medals to the successful teams.
