Highland Boxing Academy head coach Liam Foy believes his athletes’ exploits last weekend typify the mentality of the club.

Across two nights, HBA sent four fighters to two shows, covering 356 miles – and taking victories across the board, including a North District title.

Cole Fraser belatedly got to compete in his championships final after the competition was cancelled on its original Aberdeen date, but he had to travel to Laurencekirk to do it.

On Montrose club Hands of Stone’s show last Saturday, he claimed a unanimous decision over Brandon Dodds of St Francis Boxing Club to win the elite men’s 63.5kg A class title.

The night before, though, Emma Miller and Lindsay Fulton – in her case on less than 48 hours’ notice – went to Elgin, beating the host club’s Emma Innes and Josie Wells respectively by unanimous decision.

Aarron Beathet also boxed in a non-scoring exhibition on the same show.

Foy, then, was delighted with all of his boxers’ performances, saying it was a great example of what the club strives for.

“It was a great success story for Cole securing that Northern District title, which is always a tough challenge,” he explained.

“It was great for the girls as well. Two of our girls secured a couple of wins on the road too.

“That’s what we do. What I always say to clubs is that if there are doable bouts, and we’re available, we’ll travel anywhere with our boxers.

“Ultimately, that’s what we train for. We’re a hungry, active club, and it’s important to support other clubs as well because we rely on them when we have our shows.

“Boxers train in our gym to participate in the sport, so it’s up to us to get them out there and active.

“This was another weekend away from home, but that’s what the sport is about – commitment and sacrifice. We certainly are committed to make the sacrifices that are required to bring success back for the club.”
