Three new names for senior shinty/hurling tests

THREE players have been called into the Scotland squad for the first time for the Marine Harvest shinty/hurling international against Ireland this month.

Lovat’s Lorne Mackay, Calum Miller, of Kyles Athletic, and Skye’s Steven Morrison were all named in Ronald Ross’s pool of players for the tests against Ireland on October 18 then in Newry, Northern Ireland, seven days later.

Newtonmore, Lovat and Kyles are the best represented clubs, each with three players selected.

The squad is: John Barr (Glenurquhart), Kevin Bartlett (Lovat), Conor Cormack (Beauly), Callum Cruden (Lovat), Gary Innes (Fort William), Grant Irvine (Kyles), Paul MacArthur (Newtonmore), John MacDonald (Ballachulish), Roddy MacDonald (Kyles), Steven MacDonald (Newtonmore), Stuart MacDonald (Lovat), Lorne Mackay (Lovat), Fraser Mackintosh (Newtonmore), Finlay Macrae (Kinlochshiel), John Macrae (Kinlochshiel), Calum Miller (Kyles), Steven Morrison (Skye), Louis Munro (Kingussie), Shaun Nicolson (Lochaber). Head coach: Ronald Ross, assistant coaches: Jimmy Gow and Ally Ferguson, trainer: Neil Bowman.

Head coach Ross said: “I am delighted with the squad we have selected for this year’s international matches. We have a skilful, fast and mobile group of players who I am confident will provide a highly competitive match and do their best to secure a first series victory for Scotland”.

The Marine Harvest shinty/hurling International first test will take place at Bught Park, Inverness, on Saturday, October 18, throw-in 2pm. Hundreds of spectators are expected at the match, with many thousands more tuning in to live TV coverage on BBC2 in Scotland and TG4 in Ireland.

The series-deciding second test will take place the following Saturday at Páirc Esler in Newry, Northern Ireland, throw-in 5pm.

The match will be broadcast by TG4 in Ireland and BBC Alba in Scotland.

Also in Newry on that day Scotland’s senior women will play a shinty/camogie challenge match against a County Down select side (1pm) and Scotland’s under-21 men will play a shinty/hurling international against the Ireland under-21 men (3pm).
