CALEY Jags midfielder Greg Tansey reckons Richie Foran taking over the hot-seat is giving the players a fresh urge to bring success to the Scottish Premiership club.

Foran was handed a four-year contract by chairman Kenny Cameron and the board as he hung up his boots and skipper’s armband to take over the John Hughes, who left after a disagreement over budgets.

Tansey says the appointment of the 36-year-old has been warmly welcomed by the players, who are focused on kicking the club forward next season.

He said: "It has been a seamless transition. Everyone in the squad had a lot of respect for him when he was a player and now he is the gaffer, it’s even more so. Everyone just wants to do well for him. He has the full backing of the players. The fact Richie is in charge pushes you on that bit more."

Two years ago, Caley Thistle were a spot-kick shoot-out win against Aberdeen away from lifting the Scottish League Cup, which is now called the Betfred Cup and set in groups from early July.

League Two Cowdenbeath lie in wait at Central Park this Saturday before games against Dundee United (July 23, home), Dunfermline (July 26, away) and Arbroath (July 30, home) in Group C.

The former Stevenage play-maker (27) sees no reason why ICT can’t start the season in style to get into the knock-out rounds, which start on August 9.

He stressed: "We’ve come close in the League Cup before. We really want to do well in the cup competitions this season as well as in the league.

"With the cup first up, all the lads are raring to go. Whoever is selected will be determined to keep their place to get points on the board."

Tansey feels the pre-season games against Highland League opponents then League Two Elgin City have been worthwhile.

He added: "We have all managed over the past week or so to get minutes under the belt to prepare for Saturday. I thought at times we’d be more tired than we were given the running we’ve been doing, so that’s a good sign that the fitness work is paying off.

"The lads are looking strong and fresh ahead of the business starting on Saturday.

"Last week, we had double sessions most days and we’ve been getting a lot of work in, but we’ve also had a good rest and the lads are all back fresh and ready to go. You do your own things in the summer to keep yourself fit so that you hit the ground running and I think we all have."
